There are a lot of them, to any taste and budget. There are restaurants of Indian, American, Canadian and Russian cuisines, there are traditional McDonald’s and quite European Coffee-Houses, super-fashionable and super-expensive restaurants, and certainly cheap Chinese eating houses. The first floors of all non-front streets are occupied by shops and restaurants. By the way it is quite difficult to determine the title of such Chinese establishments. It is for sure not a restaurant – a restaurant has a board with the corresponding hieroglyphs and proud inscription “Such-and-such Restaurant”, besides it is by definition fashionable, sparkling, clean and with all kinds of gadgetry like lanterns, small fountains, girls in bright silky dresses with the high slashes to the waist and menus with the striking prices – thus it is undoubtedly not a restaurant. It is not also a canteen, since the latter is rather a departmental establishment. It is definitely not a bar, because bars are always marked as bars and people usually drink in bars…
In such places – and they are everywhere and the tendency of gregarious instinct is obvious (that is there are 3-4 of them in one place, in some steps there is another accumulation of them and so on…) – the prices are comparatively low, the passer-by are crowding here as well as the tourists (Chinese), willing to eat, or the inhabitants of the nearby houses/organizations. The best name for such establishments is – eating house. In such house everyone can eat since the owners do not shrink from any visitors: you can take here a bowl of soup with noodles for 5 Yuan, which makes some 0.5 dollar or you can organize a sumptuous feast for hundreds of Yuan.
There are also points hidden from the tourists. If you settled in an inexpensive hotel and not in the central streets, you will be stricken with the dirty there.
Beijing has an unusual atmosphere – probably because of no wind.
That is why all the Chinese are spitting out the dust. It is not that pleasure to watch this scene, but the authorities supposedly are going to overcome this as well.
Seemingly there is nothing impossible for China!
