(IV) About Police
Police is everywhere, at least in the central streets. The patrol cars and motorcycles are moving with the constantly switched on flashers. At the important cross-roads there are permanent patrols, a lot of patrols are standing around the central square and Imperial Palace as well as in the other public places. However one cannot say that the presence of police is obtrusive – until any breaches of order take place they do not reveal their existence. In general Beijing shows itself as a surprisingly quiet city. Though there certainly should be areas where an occasionally wandered foreigner runs the risk to be deprived of the wallet or a camera, but I did not succeed in finding them. The only trouble, the tourists might face in the streets, is the quite obtrusive beggars and endless street vendors.
